Custom Homes / Renovation

Builders Commonwealth evolved from a construction company into a design/build company, and in 1979-1980, we received a H.U.D./D.O.E. National Passive Solar Design Award. Our demonstration home, built in Hermantown, Minnesota, was one of six national demonstration homes. This 2300 square foot custom home featured a three-storey trombe wall, double envelope construction, super insulated earth berms, and site built insulated shutters and other innovative solar solutions. Boeing Aerospace monitored the building.

Subsequent solar projects incorporated both active and passive solar designs, including fan forced rock bed heat storage, solar attics, solar hot water panels, super insulation and geo-thermal heating.

Minnesota Power has recognized our homes as meeting or exceeding their "Triple-E" standards program.

Sustainable, local materials are always emphasized, and our renovation of the Whole Foods Co-Op was the first LEED certified retail store in Minnesota. In addition to our energy construction focus, most of our buildings incorporate custom trim, cabinets and
casework.

Builders Commonwealth is based in Duluth, Minnesota and principally provides construction services in a market area extending up the north shore of Lake Superior, and through northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin.

The Members of Builders Commonwealth take great pride in their craft, and strive for durable and artistic solutions for each project. Our renovation and restoration work is a delicate balance between preservation and functional needs. We blend traditional and innovative materials with energy efficient construction, customized to an owners taste and budget.
